Mastering a degree in peace and conflict studies!
December 11th 2018 will be marked in the timeline of Tomorrow The World’s history as the day our Director threw her cap in the air and said a fond farewell to academia…for now anyway she says!
After 2 years, 8 modules, 2 overseas research trips and a never-ending dissertation of almost 15,000 words, Tricia has been awarded a Masters degree in Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of Manchester. It’s been a rollercoaster with the many lows of impending deadlines and all-nighters yet highs of learning and realising, when you are passionate enough about something, you can pull all-nighters, or in one case, 36 hours straight to get the job done!
The course explored the theories and practices of conflict, peacebuilding and statebuilding and covered themes such as economics, peace and conflict; global governance; social agency, the Arab Uprisings and a critical look at the United Nations and international security.
Tricia took part in field research trips to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Uganda (scroll down our News and Blog section for reflections on her trips these country visits) and finally, coming from the commercial world she focussed her dissertation on the peacebuilding potential of development support to SMEs during conflict, looking at projects within the off-grid solar power sector.
Perhaps there was a clue on this future focus in our company name, or even our previous newsletters with aspirational quotes on hope and saving the world. All we know is we are now very excited to include speaking engagements in our service offering, to share our new-found knowledge and experiences, as well as our determination to enhance awareness of the peacebuilding potential of business.
